A day in the life of a NSW MLC ACEs work in the NSW State Parliament primarily consists of reviewing and amending legislation. As a sole representative of a political party however, he must push to introduce amendments that reflect Democrat policy in government legislation. Time is also dedicated to introducing his own bills and establishing parliamentary inquiries. He does his best to respond to requests from constituents. ACE is a medical doctor and a scientist. He believes in basing his decisions on fact and logic, with a view to the bigger picture. He has to look after the interests of the people and advocates the triple bottom line: sustainable environmental & economic development with a social conscience. On the road in NSW When he's not sitting in Parliament, or drafting legislation, ACE gets out and about to talk to the people of NSW. His road trips will appear on this site in late 2005. A member of the Upper House is elected by proportional representation, where the whole state of NSW votes, unlike the for Lower House seats where people vote for a single member to represent electorates. So effectively, Arthurs electorate is the whole of NSW. He helps constituents with problems they have with government agencies, advocates for their interests and raises issues of public importance that governments and other political parties fail to act upon. |
