Marching As To War

January 9th 2003 - John Howard's backing of a lunatic American president is bringing Australia to the brink of an international war from which there can be no early retreat, Democrat MLC Arthur Chesterfield-Evans said today.

"We saw it in Viet Nam, an illegal American war which embroiled Australia for 30 years," Dr Chesterfield-Evans said.

"The world needs no weapons of mass destruction. It needs the mass destruction of weapons in the Middle East, in Europe, in NE Asia, on the Indian sub-continent, and in North America.

"But I am opposed to any involvement of Australian forces in Bush's war on Iraq," Dr Chesterfield-Evans said.

"As Robert Fisk wrote in The Independent this week, North Korea breaks all its nuclear agreements with the United States, throws out UN inspectors and sets off to make a bomb a year, and President Bush says it's 'a diplomatic issue'. Iraq hands over a 12,000-page account of its weapons production and allows UN inspectors to roam all over the country, and after they've found not a jam-jar of dangerous chemicals in 230 raids President Bush announces that Iraq is a threat to America, has not disarmed and may have to be invaded.

"We're marching towards war," Dr Chesterfield-Evans said.

"John Howard has an obligation to protect Australian interests. His job is not to protect an American president.

"War is not the way to peace," Dr Chesterfield-Evans said.
