Waterfall derailment:
Another tragedy that could've been avoided

January 31st 2003 - Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, would like to convey his heart-felt sorrow for the victims and families of those who have suffered loss or injury in the train de-railment south of Waterfall today.

"This is a tragedy that should never of have happened again after the Judicial Inquiry into the Glenbrook accident of December 1999!"

"While the exact cause of the accident has yet to be determined, the State Government must be held accountable for the poor maintenance of track and carriages."

"The Democrats forced the State Government to publicly release the Christie report into the Sydney Metropolitan rail network last year. This report highlighted the dire situation of rail maintenance. Yet the State Government continues to pour more money into roads than rail."

"This has caused a lack of confidence in rail as a means of public transport."

The Democrats insist that the Legislative Council be recalled and that the Directors of the State Rail Authority and Rail Infrastructure Corporation be brought to the Bar of the House for an inquiry.

"How many people have to die before travelling on a train will be safe again?
