< Back "Carr Government must kick tobacco habit" February 26th 2003 - Democrat MLC and Anti-Tobacco Campaigner, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has called on the State Government to enforce current measures under the Smoke-free Environment Act 2000 to ban smoking in pubs & clubs. A report released yesterday by the Victorian Department of Health Centre for Tobacco showed that pubs and clubs in Victoria with smoke free areas do not lose business. "The NSW Government must kick its tobacco addiction and proclaim section 10 of the Smoke-free Environment Act 2000 that forces pubs to provide smoke free areas right now!" he said. "The hoteliers and tobacco lobby have set the public health agenda for far too long. This report shows that the NSW State Government's reluctance to enforce NSW law on smoking in pubs is based on false assumptions about the habits of many pub goers and ignores scientific fact that second hand smoke kills. "This report proves that pubs and clubs can still be economically viable, provide hospitality services and create jobs without the cancerous haze of second hand tobacco smoke. "The Minister for Health cannot ignore this report and must enforce current NSW laws to minimise tobacco consumption in this state," Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded. |
