National Park Bribe Another case of Carr Hype

March 3rd 2003 - Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has criticised Bob Carr's attempt to buy off the environment vote by announcing plans to create an extra 65,000 hectares of National Parks and States Forests in the North East of the State.

"As far as the Democrats are concerned, this is all pointless if Bob Carr continues to let wood chipping and logging of high conservation value native forests," he said.

"Labor promised in 1995 to stop wood chipping native forests by 2000. It is now 2003 and yet the Carr Government still hasn't delivered," he said.

"The Carr government has an appalling record on environmental issues. Unlike other parties, the Democrats won't horse-trade preferences on promises Labor never keeps." He said.

"We are looking at Labor and the Coalition's record on forestry issues and frankly, they share a very poor record," he said.

"The Democrats preferences will be crucial for Labor in the seats of Port Jackson and Clarence and in Gosford for the Coalition. Based on the record of both the major parties they will be dealt with on either an equal footing or not at all," Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded.
