< Back Age of Consent in the Upper House May 22nd 2003 - Debate began in NSW Upper House on the Crimes Amendment (Sexual Offences) late last night. Debate on the bill will continue next Tuesday. However, Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, believes that the numbers are tight and the bill my still be defeated by conservative members in the ALP, the Coalition and the Cross-Bench. "The last time the Upper House debated a similar 'private members' bill moved by ALP back bencher, Jan Burnswoods, 7 ALP members voted against the bill and it was defeated by 1 vote." "The Government has increased its majority by 2, but there are more conservative members who will vote against the bill than last time." "I fear that on past experience, the bill will be defeated again." Dr Chesterfield-Evans has also criticised the Carr Government on how Caucus is selecting when ALP members are allowed to exercise a conscious vote. "The Government will not be having a conscience vote on the proposed cannabis trial. But when it comes to issues of sexuality, Bob Carr goes to water!" Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded. |
