"G.G. Had To Go!" Says A.C.E.

May 26th 2003 - NSW Democrat MLC, Republican and child welfare campaigner, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has welcomed the resignation of the Governor-General, Dr Peter Hollingworth, announced yesterday.

"Public confidence in the role of G.G. is crucial for maintaining democracy in Australia. When Dr Hollingworth continued in the role after an Anglican Church initiated inquiry found that he allowed a known paedophile priest to work in the church, he destroyed public confidence in the Office of the Governor General and he had to go!" he said.

"It has become clear that the system of appointing the Governor-General needs to be reviewed. An emphasis on greater transparency of an applicant's background may save this scenario from happening again," he said.

"The Commonwealth Parliament should have some role in this scrutiny and interview potential candidates before a Joint Parliamentary Committee and the Prime Minister's choice should be endorsed by a two thirds (2/3) majority of both Houses," he said.

"With the controversy surrounding the Office of the Governor General, I think it is a timely reminder that Australia should re-consider the republican issue." Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded.
