"Carr must come clean on Upper House Reform," says Chesterfield-Evans

June 9th 2003 - Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, is demanding that NSW Premier, Bob Carr, comes out with any plans he has to reform the NSW Upper House.

"John Howard wants to curtail the Senate and for a Labor Premier to come out backing such an initiative indicates that he wants to do the same thing," he said.

"Carr is busily abolishing Local Government by stealth. So what does he want to do with the Upper House?" he said.

"The Premier must be honest with the people of NSW and announce his agenda for the Upper House."

"Both the NSW Upper House and Senate have seats proportional to how people voted, so there is more diversity of opinion in Parliament. Howard and Carr are now asking for 100% of the power and they must not get away with it!" he said.

"If the Carr Government is serious about democratic reform, it should change to proportional representation in the Lower House, rather than abolishing the Upper House." concluded Dr Chesterfield-Evans.
