Carr shirks responsibility on public land and bio-diversity in Western Sydney

June 16th 2003 - Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has criticised the Carr Government's announcement to allow the development of 1,900 homes on 130 hectares of the former Australian Defence Industries Site at St Mary's.

"I have been involved in the public campaign to preserve this site that contains the last piece of Cumberland woodland in the Sydney basin. I am appalled at how Bob Carr has fooled the people of Western Sydney by portraying himself as a man committed to bio-diversity protection and sensible urban planning. Yet after the election he announces this cop out!" he said.

"The Carr government's commitment to the preservation of public land is clear: there is no commitment!" he said.

"The Carr government has the power to stop the development proposal, like they did with former Commonwealth land around Sydney Harbour. However, Bob Carr has proven that he is the mate of developers, and not of the people of Western Sydney who want to protect public land," he said.

"This is the thanks the voters of Western Sydney gets when they elect the Carr "Labor" government for a 3rd term." He concluded.
