“It’s Time” for ALP to move on Corporate Manslaughter

October 3rd 2003 - NSW Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, is looking forward to the conclusion of the NSW ALP conference this long weekend.

The Democrat’s Corporate Manslaughter bill that has been sitting in the Upper House for the past 18 months and is ready to go!“I am glad that the Labour Council has finally achieved cross-factional support for pushing the State government to establish specific legislation creating a new criminal offence for Industrial Manslaughter,” he said.

The Democrat’s bill will hold individuals (directors, OH&S officers, floor managers, etc) in control of a workplace criminally responsible for their negligent acts or omissions that have resulted in a work place death or serious injury.“I have worked in Occupational Health & Safety Medicine for over ten years and I have seen first hand the devastating effects serious workplace injuries and deaths have not only on the victims, but on loved ones and work colleges” he said.

“Enough is enough! This is one aspect of the Law & Order debate both of the major parties have failed to address!” he said.

“If the Carr government is a real Labor government, then they should look after the workers and employees of NSW by ensuring a safer workplace by supporting the Democrat’s Corporate Manslaughter legislation!” Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded.
