Quarantine Station Bill Passes the Upper House

October 30th 2003 - Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans MLC said today the endorsement of his Quarantine Station Preservation Trust bill by the Legislative Council was a victory for democracy.

“By a majority, the Upper House has passed this bill. All parties supported the bill. The left and right of the political spectrum joined to preserve our history. The Government were the only ones against it. They are out of step on this issue.”

The Government is in the process of leasing the Quarantine Station site to a private company, Mawland Hotel Developments. “This is the Government’s quick fix to save a few dollars. In the process they are selling our history for thirty pieces of silver. It is a disgrace, especially since the Premier professes to be a student of history”

A number of amendments to the bill were moved as a result of a consultation process involving members of the Friends of Quarantine Station, Protectors of Public Land, National Parks Association and the Liberal Party.“These groups have worked for many years to ensure the Quarantine Station site is properly preserved and kept open to the public, not as the Government is heading, as a playground for the rich”

"The ball is now in the government's court," Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded.
