Industrial Manslaughter in the A.C.T: 25 years in prison November 28th 2003 - Industrial Manslaughter is now a criminal offence in the A.C.T. with a 25-year prison sentence for an individual or a penalty of up to $5 million for a corporation. NSW Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, congratulated Democrat, Green and ALP members who supported the Crimes (Industrial Manslaughter) Amendment Bill in the A.C.T. Legislative Assembly last night. It seems that real Labor governments in other jurisdictions actually care about preventing workplace deaths, unlike Emperor Carr in N.S.W.! he said. I have previously attempted to bring forward debate on the Democrats Corporate Manslaughter legislation in NSW. However, I was defeated by Labor and the Coalition! he said. In spite of the fact that someone is killed in a workplace accident every second day in NSW, Emperor Carr seems to be taking his time to make workplaces safer for employees, he said. If the A.C.T. can establish the criminal offence of Industrial Manslaughter why cant Bob Carr, a Premier who constantly talks up Law & Order at every election take such a step? he said. We need consistent criminal laws in Australia. Emperor Carr should take the A.C.T.s lead and support the NSW Democrats Corporate Manslaughter legislation! Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded. |
