“Smoke on the Water”?What about 2nd hand smoke in live music venues?

January 19th 2004 - Anti-tobacco campaigner, Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has come out today giving political support to the Cancer Councils’ latest campaign to get smoke-free live music venues in NSW.

“There is overwhelming scientific proof that secondhand tobacco smoke causes respiratory diseases and cancer. No one in his or her right mind can deny it. So, why should a majority of punters, bar staff and especially the performers on stage put up with the nasty second hand smoke of a few!” he said.

Dr Chesterfield-Evans is glad that the music industry is becoming part of the solution and taking action against conservative elements in the Australian Hoteliers Association.

“I know several musicians in Sydney who would prefer to play in smoke-free venues and I commend the Metro on George Street for going totally smoke free. However, performers and punters who don’t like breathing in somebody else’s second smoke should encourage other venues to go smoke free.

Dr Chesterfield-Evans is also demanding that the Premier, Bob Carr, in his capacity as Minister for the Arts, take a special interest in this issue and encourage the Department of Gaming and Racing to extend smoking bans in live music venues. But Dr Chesterfield-Evans wants artists and the supporters of live Australian music to express their preference for smoke free live venues.

“It is your choice and it is your scene. If you want smoke free-venues, then let Bob Carr and the managers of venues know that you want to see live Australian music in a smoke free environment!” Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded.
