Howard Value Neutral On Public Education

January 20th 2004 - NSW Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has described Prime Minister Howard’s comments in The Australian today about public schools being “too politically correct and too value neutral” as foolish.

“The reality is that Mr. Howard is diverting more and more money away from public education to subsidise non-government schools so he can save the federal government the expense of educating children. That is why parents who care about their child’s education are getting themselves into debt by sending their kids to private schools.” he said.

Dr Chesterfield-Evans is also upset that Mr. Howard has accused public education as being “too value neutral” and “too politically correct”“Political correctness is a pejorative term used by people who don’t like restrictions on bigoted statements,” he said.

“Is giving children a liberal education “too politically correct?” he asked.“Mr. Howard’s blanket criticism of ”political correctness” should be weighed up against his actions and his values,” he said.“This is pretty rich coming from a man who lied to justify Australia’s involvement in the U.S. lead war on Iraq. What kind of “values” does Mr. Howard have when he allows the children of asylum seekers to grow up in detention centres?” he said.

“Criticising teachers and their unions is not going to solve the crisis in public education. Supporters of quality secular public education have an enemy and a clear objective. We have to get rid of John Howard at the next federal election. If we fail, I fear public education is as good as dead!” Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded.
