< Back Gas Leak Shows Carr All Hot Air On Emergency Planning February 5th 2004 - NSW Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans has blasted the Carr government for failing to deliver an adequate emergency contingency plan for public transport in light of this afternoons gas leak, which has effectively crippled city rail services. The Premier is willing to spend millions of dollars on hiring security guards to patrol the Anzac & Sydney Harbour Bridges and the Opera House as a measure against potential terrorist attack. Well, what good has that been in an emergency such as this? he said. The Carr Government has made a big song & dance about security and emergency planning since 9/11. But it seems Emperor Carr and the Minister for Transport, Mr Costa, have failed to produce a real contingency plan to adequately deal with an emergency on this scale! he said. A gas leak on the city circle line has closed Martin Place, Town Hall, Wynard, Circular Quay and St James stations. These stations have been evacuated and the North Shore line and some Eastern suburbs services have been canceled. Central is the only station that is currently operating and is apparently overrun with commuters and people seeking to leave the city. If the Carr government was serious about planning for emergencies on this scale then, wed see less chaos on the City Rail services today. The Premier and the Minister for Transport have to get their priorities straight! Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded. |
