< Back No Smoking Areas In Clubs Fail February 24th 2004 - An Australian study published in the journal Tobacco Control has found that no smoking areas in N.S.W. licensed clubs contain as many tobacco toxins as smoking areas. The study involved comparison of the levels of atmospheric nicotine, particulate matter and carbon monoxide in the no smoking and general smoking areas of 17 licensed clubs in Sydney. Democrat MLC and Anti-Tobacco campaigner, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, said the study proved the Carr governments compromise with the Hoteliers lobby is still putting the non-smoking majority of club patrons and employees at risk of being poisoned. The clubs are at war with Carr government over the pokies tax and the Premier is too afraid to implement state-wide ban on smoking in clubs, he said. We have moved 1.5 meters over the past 50 years of scientific research that shows tobacco kills, he said. Pubs and clubs are the last indoor workplaces where smoking is not banned. It is time the Carr government came out and supported my proposed bill to remove all current exemptions and make smoking in enclosed public spaces prohibited. Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded. |
