< Back Dems Welcome Support for Corporate Manslaughter Legislation May 17th 2004 - NSW Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has called on the Carr government to support the Democrats Corporate Manslaughter bill after recommendatsions for the introduction of the criminal offence were made by the inquiry into Serious injury and death in the Workplace today. "I have been campaigning for the inclusion of a "Corporate Manslaughter" offence in the Crimes Act since 2001. However, this so-called Labor government has blocked all of my previous attempts to bring debate forward on my legislation." "This parliamentary inquiry has recognised the lack of accountability when it comes to preventing workplace deaths. Big business must be accountable for workplace safety and my bill will ensure this." "A person is killed in a workplace accident every second day in NSW and the issue of corporate negligence is a part of the Law & Order debate Bob Carr and John Brogden refuse to address!" "The Carr government has no excuse! Its time for them to support the Democrats Corporate Manslaughter legislation." Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded. |
