Dr Supports Motorcycle Awareness Week Initiative
August 20th 2005
Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has offered his strong support for the mPower
initiative being launched by the NSW Motorcycle Council (NSW MCC) today.
Mpower focuses on developing the skill and judgement of young riders through
a mentoring program. Its a great idea and well worthy of support,
he said.
Dr Chesterfield-Evans said the need for education of the young rider was
born out by the statistics of single vehicle crashes.
Riders under 25 own 10 percent of the bikes but account for 30 percent
of the crashes. The need for more awareness amongst this group of riders
is obvious, said Dr. Chesterfield-Evans.
Guy Stanford, President of the NSW MCC said that motorcycle safety issues
will become even more important because of the price of petrol.
"You are going to see a lot more bikes on the road as the price of
petrol continues to rise. It is time that the Government got serious about
motorcycle safety and recognized the benefits of two wheel transport in
Sydneys transport mix," said Mr. Stanford.
Dr Chesterfield-Evans added that the recent traffic debacle resulting
from the opening of the cross city tunnel was another indicator that motorcycle
use should be encouraged.
"Anything that improves the traffic flow has got to be a good thing.
The Government is doing their best to stuff things up at the moment, and
bikes at least can go some way to improving the movement of people round
the city, concluded Dr. Chesterfield-Evans.
