NSW Democrats Back Parliament Staff Walkout

August 28th 2006

Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, gives his full support to the industrial action taken by 800 parliamentary staff against budget cuts announced earlier this year.

Staff from library, catering, building and security services have joined forces in response to Treasurer Michael Costa's $2.8 million cut to the NSW Parliament’s budget.

“These people are going to lose their jobs and parliament will lose their services. With hansard staff on restricted hours, we will have even less time to thrash out problems with legislation or raise important questions,“ said Dr Chesterfield-Evans.

Cuts are likely to have a larger impact on independents and minor parties as they lack the resources available to the major parties.

“This is not the first time that parliamentary budget restrictions have imposed greater stress on members outside the major parties, making it more difficult to preserve the public’s interest,” concluded Dr Chesterfield-Evans.
