Don Chipp’s Legacy will Continue On

August 29th 2006

NSW Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, is saddened at the passing of one of the Founding Members of the Australian Democrats, Mr Don Chipp at age 81.

“Don’s influence in Australian politics’ cannot be understated. He will be remembered for transforming the political landscape by destroying the duopoly of the two party system - and I intend to carry on this legacy,” he said.

Don Chipp entered Federal Politics in 1960 and served as a Minister under several Liberal Prime Ministers. He resigned from the Liberal Party in 1977 and went on to form a centrist and truly liberal political movement in the Australian Democrats.

“Don re-invigorated Centre Left and small ‘l’ liberal political movements in the 70’s. He proved that minor parties can campaign on issues like the environment, nuclear disarmament and social justice and be elected to hold the balance of power in Parliament.” Dr Chesterfield-Evans concluded.
