Dems Analysis Shows Opposition is No Opposition

November 1st 2006

Analysis undertaken by Democrats MLC, Dr. Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has revealed that the NSW Opposition has supported the Labor Government in 91% of votes on bills in the current session.

Although the Liberal/National Coalition have traditionally been proclaimed as the "Opposition", voting trends on government legislation in the current session of NSW Parliament confirm that they have only opposed three out of thirty-four bills.*

"The public is given a very good show of dissent from the Coalition in this state, but it is clear from our initial analysis that the only alternative views being expressed in real terms, are coming from independents and minor parties like the Democrats," said Dr. Chesterfield-Evans.

Dr. Chesterfield-Evans is deeply concerned that the level of debate on important issues has declined in recent years, due to changes to the voting system at the last election.

Dr. Chesterfield-Evans will be introducing legislation in November that will mark the beginning of a campaign for serious electoral reform.
