< Back Workchoices = 75% of NSW Employees May Become The New Working Poor November 23rd 2006 NSW Democrat MLC, Dr Arthur Chesterfield-Evans, has warned that the Howard Governments Workchoices Legislation will Americanise the labour market and will create a new generation of working poor in Australia if it remains in place. His comments come as the NSW Standing Committee on Social Issues released its report on the Impact of the Commonwealth Workchoices Legislation today. "All the evidence presented to the committee re-asserted the reasons why the Australian Democrats blocked the Legislation for 8 years while they had the balanced of power in the Senate. The current Workchoices laws has reduced employee rights and created great uncertainty for over 75% of the workforce in NSW," said Dr. Chesterfield-Evans. Only one quarter of the workforce are union members and many employees are uncertain and anxious about negotiating their own Australian Workplace Agreements. The Howard governments I.R. laws are not about choice for employees as a result of Mr Howard obsession with destroying the Union movement, hundreds of thousands of employees now only have one choice - put up or shut up if you want to keep your job," he concluded. |
